insists that the American citizens need a wakeup call to get rid of their crazed lifestyle for which they have been paying heavy social, economic and spiritual cost. Kunstler has used the book as platform to convince people about changing their lives and surroundings. He believes that the American nation could rediscover its virtue by reviving the civic art and life. He makes people think about their future and the initiatives that should be taken today in order to make a better future. The book also asserts that if American will not concentrate upon building better places for their future than the other people will come and get control over their society through cultural and social dominance.

The book expresses Kunstler hatred for the corporate control and sprawl because he believes that it is the root cause of the offensive landscape. He feels the need of more humane communities as well as new urbanism development to restructure the present state of the urban communities. He points out several failures of urban planning and also talks about the progressive renaissance. He starts from the problems and development phases of a small town and takes it to a broader landscape to identify the core problem areas and critical issues within the development and growth of the society.

Kunstler explains his standpoint regarding the failure of the urban states of the present time. He describes that during the last century the world community has witnessed the evolution of automobile industry that is now playing the viral role in the development process of the society. He believes that the auto-led development is the main player that has ruined the surroundings because many of the greatest communities have been replaced by the dehumanizing places developed with the help of the automobiles.
