Predictors of divorce Chances of a couple heading toward divorce vary from case to case, yet there are certain factors that can help one predict thetendency of a marriage ending in divorce. One such factor is frequent argumentation between the husband and wife. Couples in which neither of the two members submits during argumentation, and makes winning a matter of satisfying ego has a high tendency to end in divorce. Particularly, when the argumentation gets abusive and insulting, chances of divorce get very high.

Many a times, arguments start over petty matters, and continued practice of them develops a culture of fight, disagreement, and lack of harmony between the partners. Marriage is a relationship that demands honesty, sincerity, and loyalty from the partners in all aspects of life. Hence, when either of the two marital partners shows dishonesty, insincerity, or disloyalty in some way, marriage is likely to end up in divorce. A very common way in which this happens is through marital partners cheating upon each other.

These days, people often make love to people outside marriage, and when their partners discover it one way or the other, divorce becomes the destiny of the couple. The high tendency of marital partners to cheat upon each other is evident from the cases discussed in The Maury Show. One predictor of divorce, which is also very surprising, is divorce among couples that did love marriage. Couples who do arranged marriage tend to be more committed toward sustaining the relationship compared to those that do love marriage.

This can be attributed to the fact that marriage among such couples is, more often than not, a decision driven by emotions. They get married without giving it much thought, and when the warmth of the love subsides over some time, they head for divorce just as impatiently as they had headed for marriage before. It is, indeed, surprising that arranged marriages tend to be more stable than love marriages. Another very important predictor of divorce is the family structure an individual is raised in.

“In many, many ways, the family that a person is raised in sets the stage for a person’s relational future” (Welch, 2012).Media’s role in depicting the tendency of people to seek divorce cannot be overemphasized. The rate of divorce has tremendously increased of late, and this can be attributed to the role of media to a large extent. Divorce rate has particularly increased over the last few decades as a result of women empowerment. Media has tried to inculcate this sensibility in women that in order to get their rights, they need to step out of the confines of the traditional family structure, and compete with men in all areas of life.

Media has achieved this by making single or divorced women role-models for the audience through dramas, movies, and theatres. Concluding, divorce rate has increased in the recent decades. Some predictors of marriage are frequent abusive argumentation, love marriage based on emotional and uninformed decision making, and family structure that either or both marital partners are raised in. Media has encouraged people to seek divorce by associating divorce with freedom and liberation. References:Welch, K. J. (2012).
