Mobile Phone Usage: Ethics and Standardization Mobile phones or cellphones are one of the most essential contributions of the modern technology. It made communication available almost anywhere and everywhere not just in a particular location but even worldwide. When people are on the go, mobile phones make them possible to give instructions or get messages from other people who might also be on the go. Often than not, people even use their mobiles while in transit. This makes a person’s attentiveness divided between the information being conveyed to him through his mobile and the events going on in the streets.

Is there a need to regulate mobile usage as it can be a distraction while a person is driving? Could people be abusing their usage of the mobile phone? Can it be possible to educate people towards the proper utility of their cellphones? Mobile Phone Usage: Ethics and Standardization Are people starting to be unethical when using their mobile phones? Can technology be causing lives of people especially in the roads? Are the technological advancements making possible risks in human safety? As much as information is just a click away from a person, danger can also be moments away from that very same click.

Technological advancement especially in the information field have proven its worth and importance in the society. It even makes the world seem to be smaller than it is due to the availability of communication. Many different words can pertain to a mobile phone like cellular phone, cellphone, mobile, smartphone and others but they all just perform the same function. Also as technology advances, the use of the mobile phone also increases. At first, mobile phones were introduced mainly for voice calls, then came the Short Messaging System (SMS) or commonly known as text messages.

Then from the basic text messaging and voice calls, the cellphones are not transformed to what is known as smartphones. These gadgets can perform the basic features of a hand-held computer added to the functions of the basic cellphone. Some of these gadgets even aid its user while travelling via the Global Positioning System (GPS). With its functions increasing, a person can be concluded to be using its mobile during most hours of the day while performing different tasks (Fitzek & Reichert, 2007).

A person has a tendency to live its life on a very fast pace. Often too fast that one performs multiple tasks at a particular time. Since the cellphones are compact and are battery operated, it can be carried anywhere and everywhere by its user. It could be one of the reasons as to why it was named originally as a mobile phone. With its importance, one should know the true function of a cellphone as to not abuse it. Another reason as to why one should further criticize and evaluate the cellphone is that often people use their mobile phones inappropriately.

One can be guilty of using it while in meetings, while in church and most commonly while driving (Business & Legal Reports, Inc, 2008; McKenzie et al, 2005). The moment a person knows how to navigate a smartphone or any mobile phones, that person should know when, where and how it should be used. Teenagers and adults alike should be very cautious in using these devices. Whether one is a regular employee or an executive of a company, whether the user is a government official or a civilian, or whether a user is just an apprentice, a person should know when and how to properly use a mobile device.

It is not to discourage people from using it rather it is a step to further educate people how to properly use it without possibly harming the self or others. Basic questions to be asked should contain the fundamentals as to why one needs a mobile phone and how it will be used. An example of which would be whether it will be used for plain communication or business though leisure can also be added to it. Another possible question could be what should be done with a mobile in different scenarios i.e. when one is at a conference, a meeting or in a public place.

If the user is a holder of a driver’s license, one should be asked what to do when there is an incoming message or call while the vehicle is in transit. Supporting question for the latter would be one’s opinion towards the emergence of handsets and loud speakers as an alternative when answering voice calls. There have been an increase number of road incidents when the driver/s involved is using their mobile phones. Others may say that they are taking precautions especially in answering a voice call or sending a message.

However, full attentiveness should be practiced most particularly when driving is involved. An automobile is vital in the field of transport hence it should be treated with importance and respect with regards to its capabilities. One proposition to lessen road incidents involving mobile phone users is for one to undergo an orientation regarding the usage of gadgets while driving before issuance of a driver’s license.
