This is applicable in both learning institutions and community level. In the community level, time management can be applied in various organizations. In learning institutions, students are advised to give priority to what is relevant to the class work or studies and they can even postpone irrelevant activities. This will enable the students to accomplish their studies and meet the highest standards of qualifications in the final exams. In the community specifically in companies and organizations, time management is a factor that is considered in departments like those of management and labor. This is because the labor department will pay their employees as per number of hours worked. The employees should employ time management for them to be highly paid (Fidgeon 2010, p. 179). Purpose Time management helps the students to determine their priorities. This will helps the students because they will list their tasks according to order of importance. This means that the important things will come first and the others will follow. For example, the student will give priority to the time to study and not the playing time. Time management will enable the student to cover many areas of study within a short time. This will enable the student to use less time in covering the topics and thereafter he/she will get time to revise. Time management will assist the student to lower stress. This will assist the student to accomplish his/her tasks on time and avoid being overwhelmed. Time management will assist the student to advance in his/her career. This is because the student with an effective time management will perform well in class, which will give the student a chance to be given a post as a prefect or class representative. This will be a beginning student career, as he might become a leader in future. Effective time management well assists the student to avoid procrastination. This will assist the student to have a positive impact on studying. Time management will assist the student to focus on the current task, which is studying (Fidgeon 2010, p. 281). This will make the student deliver quality of work in studying. This is because he/she will be focusing on studying only. Effective time management will lead to the achievement of self-management. This is because self-management and time management go hand in hand. The student will be able to manage himself/herself as he/she will be deciding on what to do in every given time. Objectives of Time Management skills i. It helps the student to determine how he/she is using time presently. ii. It will assist the student to know how much time is in his/her control. iii. It will assist the student know how to make use of effective time under control. iv. It will help the student to handle the time under control in an efficient way. v. It will allow the student to use the time in the way he/she chooses. Strategies of Time Management Blocks of study time and break The student should develop a typical weekly plan for blocks of study time. The blocks should be between 30 and 50 minutes. This is because the student becomes restless after about 30 minutes. Different materials require different times. This is because some materials make the student to be easily tired. For example, a block of study for mathematics and theory should not be the same. The one for mathematics should be a bit shorter than that of the theory subjects. During the breaks, the student should have enough time to relax, have a snack, and even re-organize or refresh him/herself. Dedicated study spaces The student should determine a free place where there are no distractions. There should be no cell phone to avoid messaging or calls. This will allow the student to have maximum concentration without distraction from hobbies or friends. The student should have an alternative place where he/she can go as a change of environment. The alternative places can be department study center or library. A change of environment can enable the student to access more resources. For example in the libraries, the student can get access to many books written by different writers (Fidgeon 2010, p. 412). Weekly Reviews The student should design a weekly review. This can be done by selecting one day in a week where it will be only review. On this day, the student will be reviewing what he/she has been doing all over the week. For example, the student can decide to review the notes, assignments, and the general calendar. This will assist the student to understand more what he/she has been learning since the beginning of the term as the exam deadline approaches. Prioritize the assignments The student should prioritize the assignments as per the urgency and complication of each assignment. The most complex assignment should come first when the mind of the student is fresh. This will enable the student to tackle it with full concentration. The student should be more flexible such that he/she will get the feedback of the complex and urgent assignments before they are due. Achieve or get something done In every step, the student should either get or achieve something. For every individual, it is difficult to start or begin something. This is because he/she is trying to be perfect. The student might want to assemble everything before starting to study. That is not the case as he/she can begin by one-step and add other requirements in the process of studying. An individual can be 100% when assembling the requirements, as they will realize other requirements on the process. Postpone unnecessary activities The student should postpone unnecessary tasks or activities until the schoolwork is completed. This is a difficult situation in time management. This is because the student gets too demanding and appealing activities, which are unexpected and unnecessary (Fidgeon 2010, p. 104). When a student is involved in the unnecessary activities it will result to poor performance on paper, test, or even in preparation for a task or an activity. During the study time, the student should try to avoid completely anything that can disturb or distract the schedule for learning. These unnecessary activities will be comfortable later when there is no pressure to study. Use free time wisely The student should utilize any free time wisely on studying. Any free time that the student gets should use it to handle the incomplete class activities. For example, assignments, pending notes, and other activities should be completed in case of any free time. This will enable the student to adjust the time it could be used on these tasks for revising and other incomplete activities. Review notes before class The student should spend a short time to review notes before the next class. This will enable the student to remember where the lecturer stopped last time. This is very important as a student can familiarize him/herself on what can be done in the next lesson. The student will understand better as he/she had gone through the notes before elaboration by the lecturer. Time Management Procedures In time management, the student should strive to be authentic. He should honest to both the lecturers and other students. These will him/her to get assistance from others on how to go about on time management. The students should have favor trusting relationships with lecturers and other students. This will enable him/her to be trusted and counted on. The student should set a maximum of two priorities every day where he/ she will work on them in a timely manner. The student will have spent a lot of time on them, but he/she will have understood the items better. After setting the priorities, the student should do away with anything that is not consistent with the set priorities (Fidgeon 2010, p. 275). This is because anything that is inconsistent will make the student not to concentrate on the priorities leading to poor time management. The student should have ways where he/she can do things faster and better. This will make the student utilize the time available in revising. This is because he/she will be spending a short time on one thing and he will be true. This will make the student deal with many tasks within a short time. This will make the student cover all the study area before the start of the exam or even accomplish the assignment before the next lesson. The student should focus a head by predicting what might come in the exam or the next lesson. This will enable the student to deal on the narrow end of the studies instead of studying widely, which will take a lot of time. Student Activities The students should be put in groups such that the lecturer can give the students questions. The lecturer will use the question to know how the students can manage their time. The students are given different questions, which they will discuss in groups and later present the questions in front of the class. The questions will be a mixture of difficult and simple questions. A group of students with good time management will begin from the difficult questions. This is because their minds are still a fresh and they can tackle the difficult questions easily. The other easier questions will be done later after the hardest ones are true. The group with poor time management will begin with the easier questions. They will spend more time on the easier questions when they start to deal with difficult questions, they will have been exhausted. Student Assessment Techniques and Outcomes The lecturer should assess the students such he/she can know if the students managed study time on their own. This will be done practically whereby the lecturer should give some tasks to the students such he/she can observe how they are managing their free time. The lecturer will be forced to offer the student assignment after class. This will be the first thing in the next lesson. The lecturer will be in a position to differentiate the students with a good time managements from those with poor time management (Fidgeon 2010, p. 143). Those with good time management will accomplish the assignment before the next class. This is because the assignment is urgent and it should be given priority. For those who are poor in time management, they will give priority to other tasks and they will be caught before accomplishing the assignment n the next lesson. The students can be assessed by being asked what they learned in the previous lesson. The lecturer will be able to know good time managers and poor time managers by using this method. Those with good time management will be able to brief the class or the lecturer what they learned in the previous lesson. This is because they go through the notes before the next lesson starts as per their time management. Those with poor time management will not be able to remember what they were taught in the last lesson. This is because, after the lesson, they did not bother to revise what they learn before the next lesson. In the general school routine, the lecturer can be able to assess the time management of the students. Students having good time management will postpone all other duties and concentrate on class work. Those who are poor in time management will be busy attending functions, which will be of no use in their class work. Students should only attend to the academic tours where they will gain something connected to their class work and not any function that is held in or outside the school. Students with good time management will not sit down all day concentrating on books. They should have some break in between their schedules. This will enable them to relax and even have some refreshments before resuming to their studies. In some case student with poor time management will concentrate on their studies without having a break. This will make their minds tired and instead they will not be gaining anything in what they are studying (Fidgeon 2010, p. 432). Continuous assessment tests can be used to assess the students. This will enable the lecturer to know if the students have been revising through their class work. This revision is part of time management, as a student should go through notes in preparation for the exam. Those with good time management will be in a position to tackle the tests as required by the lecturer. Those who are having poor time management will not be able tackle the paper. This is because they have been spending their time on different things other than their class work. Conclusion Time management skills are very important in the school curriculum. This is because it will enable the students to manage the available time in their studies. The students will use the skills and they will be able to avoid unnecessary tasks by concentrating on what is relevant and urgent. When the students are trained on the importance time management skills the lecturers will be overworked. This is because the students will responsible in dealing with major parts of their studies. After every lesson, the students will revise what they were taught. This will enable the students to understand better and the lecturer will have easier task to go through the previous notes before going other tasks in the next lesson. Lecturers should advice the students to go in groups on their free time to discuss and share ideas about their class work. This will enable understand better than the lecturer because they will be practicing self-assessment. Group discussion will assist the students to be busy discussing instead of idling yet they have some tasks to cover (Fidgeon 2010, p. 254). Time management will enable the students to give priority to their class activities and postpone others tasks which are not necessary or relevant to their class work. Everywhere in the community, institution, company, and business time management skill is a factor, which should be considered. This is because the time factor is applicable in every part of the organization or a company. For example, products should be produced in good time such that they can get the market.
