The book is an excellent investigative piece by two pioneers in research. It symbolizes much more than a convenient thesis of the rising literature on international policing because it demonstrates the role of the development that has been accomplished in this research field. In refining the body of scientific work that has been done on this subject and deliberating on its theoretical and practical impacts, Bowling and Sheptycki intensify what might previously have been thought of as a small concentration in the sociology of policing to a novel, more central position.

As is repeated throughout the book, the effects of global policing are not only obvious in police activity at the international level, but also define numerous dimensions of daily policing across the world. Nevertheless, most local policing is not dependent upon global connections. In addition, thinking along the lines of global policing has significant effects on the manner in which policing is conceptualized since it presents new problems. It particularly begs the question: how do we implement democratic accountability in law enforcement agencies that have primarily defined their operational scope in the regulatory loopholes of the global-state-system?

In communicating a new global recognition of policing, this book is an excellent exercise in academic efficiency (33). This book is accessible and precise, yet it is still theoretically engaging. It encourages new angles, which productively combine with the classic policing theory. It also has the ability to brilliantly deploy a variety of methods – from typological structures to real examples – that communicate the complexity of its topic, but still make it relevant enough to relate to every reader.
