Moral Issues Related To Seven Deadly Sins There is no doubt that the book Seven Deadly Sins by Daniel Born is just one of the many books about the seven deadly sins that presented different interpretations regarding the seven deadly sins. Basically, the seven deadly sins namely pride, envy, anger, sloth, greed, gluttony and lust are discussed and how these sins are being manifested in every person’s life. However, despite the fact that people know that those sins written above are considered deadly or vicious, how come people still practice them? Why are there people who feel good about committing bad things and if these are considered bad, why are people created with these characteristics? This essay is majorly aim to finding out reasons why people still practice these seven deadly sins and why there still exist people who practice bad things and feel good about it. The essay will, therefore, discuss the short story about the Roman Fever by Edith Wharton. This will answer the question, how far can envy and jealousness go in destroying another person? The book is very comprehensive from the foreword to the content and yet, it appears that many people are still oblivious about these. Sin is elucidated in the foreword and the sins to be tackled were likewise discussed beforehand. The stories and the beginning of the ideas behind seven deadly sins can be traced back to St. Gregory as well as his identification of the normal dangers of the soul while taking into consideration Mahatma Gandhi. It also examines the classifications and perils represented by the seven deadly sins one by one. The plot of Wharton’s short story can be compared to a house of cards. Each card has a significant support to the entire structure that if one is taken out, it will lose its essence. The commencing scene where daughters, Barbara and Jenny, run off to meet young provokes Mrs. Slade’s memories of her as well as Mrs. Ansley’s romantic adventures in Rome, 25 years prior to the present scene. She tried to share how Ansley has changed physically. Her observation establishes the concealed rancor she feels towards her companion and predicts every so implicitly the incongruous ending. Edith Wharton defies the thought of knowledge as well as understanding, even a person’s private experiences. The employment of Jackie Royster’s scenic analysis to Wharton’s Roman fever represents the idea that any person just because of envy and competition never achieves an awareness of the reality of human life as well as existence. This can be seen in the story when “She wished that Jenny fall in love- with the wrong man, even; that she might have to be watched, outmaneuvered, rescued” (Wharton, p.50). This is already an evidence of how evil can manipulate and poison one’s mind just because of envy. Furthermore, Roman Fever depicts how the American women’s texts both contributes and compete men’s literary patriotism. There are two salient factors present in this gendered nationalism. One is the fact that American women acknowledged and maneuvered conventional structures that encourage nationalism, their texts use the rhetorical methodologies as well as symbolism that male writers frequently invoke. The other one is that women seek to find the relation between their personal experience as women and the domestic state in general. However in view of the fact that acts are according to intentions, the two poverties are as distant from one another as hell is from heaven. Nevertheless, it is not hard to envision and certainly one feels that it must have in point of fact took place more than once that a great saintly master might take a collector and turn him into a saint and the term turn is employed here deliberately, for the greediness would require to be totally re-oriented. Fervent passion in the appearance of love, fear, vengeance, enmity as well as envy poisons the relationship between Alida Slade and Grace Ansley. It can be read in the story that Grace fell in love with Alida’s fiancé Delphin. Because of fear of losing Delphin, and because of her yearning for revenge, Alida performs a plot revealing Grace to an evening chill that made her sick and in result isolated her from Delphin. For the following 25 years that come, Alida churns with enmity for Grace while trying to pretend to be friends with her. She likewise forms intense jealousy of Grace’s daughter Barbara due to her apparent superiority to her own daughter Jenny. On the other hand, Grace tried to withstand life with Horace while Delphin lived close to her fathering her child, while being married to Alida. For St. Gregory, the extensive reanimation of the idea of the Seven Deadly Sins happened during the 16th century. In fact, in his list, he wrote pride as the chief sin although in this case, Roman Fever depicted envy and lust as the beginning of the sin. For him the seven deadly sins are pride, lust, gluttony, greed, laziness, exasperation and envy. Meanwhile, many historians believe that the gravest sin is pride because it has the ability to run short to the rest of the seven deadly sins. However, I would like to argue how some of those historians failed to consider other sins like the one presented in the Roman Fever story, which are obviously vicious as well like deceit, which is common nowadays among people. In the story, it was shown while Alida pretended to be a friend when in truth, she had other intentions. In theory, some could uphold a more egalitarian society. Gluttony, for instance, asserts against any person consuming too much that others are underprivileged and starving. In reality, religious authorities hardly ever relate these standards against the attitudes of the affluent and the influential; rather, they have been more practical in protecting the poor in their place and consequently preserving the status quo. Religion is normally utilized to endorse ideologies which help populace recognize their lot in life instead of their struggle for something diverse and better. Additionally, there are no rational sins of any kind here. Approving or promoting beliefs on the base of unreasonable feelings and devoid of empirical confirmation is not a predicament. Not even lying is a deadly sin here, lying as a consequence of love or in the service of God for instance, is less wicked than being angry over inequality and lies of other people. What type of system is this? This is the basis why secular, atheistic philosophies have not preserved or continued these sins in any approach In the story, the three prominent sins were jealousy, envy and deceit which was portrayed by the different characters in the story of the Roman Fever. There are indeed many loopholes that need to be considered here. Despite the fact that the seven deadly sins are indeed vicious, it is also important to consider that there are many other sins that become the basis of other sins. Also, it is undeniable that the society in general regardless whether they have religion or not, are more susceptible to the norms formulated by the society which is obviously out of the borders of what is considered good and acceptable. There should be proper education and execution for people to witness and follow, something that is not only done by words but in action as well, otherwise this will remain meaningless.
