?Service capabilities Vignettes Introduction The North African scenario requires serious mobilization of forces. Already, the US forces are up in action to make sure that their interests, which include but not limited to saving human life and restoring peace. (1) What capabilities each Service could provide that would be particularly effective in this crisis? (Why should one capability be selected over others?) In the scenario of Northern Africa, the US military can use Naval, Army and Air services to ensure stability The U.S. Navy Services The services have the capability to operate in any threat environment expanded warfare capability on both land and at sea thus a good way to provide operational freedom. The Naval services have a composition and capabilities of major deployment elements. These elements are the Carrier Strike Group, Ambitious Ready Group, Surface Strike Group and Naval Fleet Auxiliary Force. The Carrier Strike Group offers its services in all threat environments. It has the capabilities to offer full support in non-permissive environment. This is because it has all the anti-ship missiles, ballistic missiles, fighter aircrafts, electromagnetic jammers, cruise missile equipped surface combatants and submarines. These war weapons ensure that the group has the force power to offer great services in time of any crisis. The Amphibious Ready Group consist of three amphibious ships with naval elements, a fleet of surgical team which offers medical capabilities, Tactical Air Control Squadron and both displacement and non-displacement landing crafts. The Surface Strike Group capabilities support crisis response missions or sustained missions and may employed in limited non-permissive environments characterized by multiple threats. In this case therefore, it offers passive surveillance and tracking, passive defense and early warning, strike operations and sea control. It is equipped with three surface ships: two strike capable surface combatants and one surface combatant ship. With these equipments, the Surface Strike Groups capabilities include maritime ballistic missile defense. The Naval Fleet Auxiliary Force has forty ships that act as supply lines to the U.S. Navy ships at sea. Ideally, the group provides everything to the Navy fleet to remain at sea, on station and combat ready for extended periods. In addition, it conducts towing, rescue and salvage operations. With such capabilities, they can support initial crisis response missions in non-permissive environments characterized by multiple threats. Algeria is an uncertain environment because its Islamic militia wants to overturn the government as well as intrude into the Moroccan territory. This means it does not support any US military services. The U.S. Army Services The army services play a critical role in any type of calamity. It protects its people as well as the resources that are of great interest to the people. Title 10 USC is an army inside an army that has the land combat and service forces. It offers prompt and sustained combat incident to operations on land. Therefore, it responsible for the preparation of all land forces necessary for effective prosecution of war. The army is organized into three Army Commands (TRADOC, FORSCOM and AMC), nine other commands that are Army Service Component Commands (ASCC) of unified or sub unified combatant commands and eleven direct reporting units. Army Service Component Command or rather the Theater Army is responsible for organizing, equipping, training, maintaining and logistically sustaining the army forces. It has the capabilities to maneuver large land-force weaponry during offensive attacks thus capable of long-range strategic and operational missions. Maturity of the theater always has a great influence on the army capabilities because it determines how the army force will operate. It therefore will be based as the Joint task Force- capable headquarters to control all the forces for effectiveness. The Army commands include the U.S. Army Training and Doctrine Command, U.S. Army Material Command and U.S. Army Forces Command. TRADOC offers services through recruiting, training and educating soldiers. AMC provides technology, acquisition, support and logistics to the Army. FORSCOM is responsible for mobilization and combat readiness of assigned active Army and USAR units and training supervision of Army National Guard during peacetime. To ensure that the army realizes its capabilities when offering its services, it makes good use of the wheeled vehicles, tracked vehicles, aircrafts, anti-armor missiles, field artillery, MLRS family of Munitions, Air Defense Weapons and systems. The Coast guard services The Coast Guard services assist Sailors and Marines in the U.S. Navy-led African Partnership Station to improve the maritime governance of African nations. It also fosters cooperation among countries and with the United States. This is the most important capability of the service. It gives chances to people to work in military partly at the same time keeping a different profession. This group of guard best also serves in boating and safety checks for the vessel. Its operational structure is categorized into three types of forces which are; multi-mission shore-based forces. This unit entails helps to teams of navigation, stations of boats and response and prevention forces like port operations forces, vessel inspectors, centers of communication and mission controllers. The second force is the maritime patrol and interdiction forces that operate on offshore and work near the shores and in ports when a critical tragedy o the local command, the control, and capabilities of communications. The final force in the coast guard is the deployable specialized forces that quickly moved essentials with skills that are specialized in enforcing laws, security in the military, and response to hazards. It offers the coast guard course capability and flexibility The Air Forces services It offers trusted services because of its integrity during its missions. It provides compelling air, space and cyber capabilities by using the combatant commanders. Its mission is to fly, fight and win in air, space and cyberspace. The numbered Air Forces: First Air Force or Air Forces Northern services ensure the air sovereignty and air defense by providing air defense in form of airspace surveillance and airspace control. It has the capability of responding to non-military threats under the Defense Support to Civil Authorities. Some of the aligned wings are; 119th Fighter Wing, Hector Field, Fargo, ND: MQ-1, C-21 Det. 1, 119th Fighter Wing, Langley AFB, VA: F-16C 120th Fighter Wing, Great Falls International Airport, MT: F-16 125th Fighter Wing, Jacksonville IAP, FL: F-15 Det. 1, 125th Fighter Wing, Homestead Air Reserve Station, FL The Ninth Air Force is another numbered air force serves as the air component within the area of responsibility. It uses the following aligned wings; 33rd Fighter Wing (F-15C/D), Eglin AFB, FL; 18th Air Support Operations Group, Pope AFB, NC; 820th Security Forces Group, Moody AFB, GA; and 823rd RED HORSE Squadron, Hurlburt Field, FL. Air Combat Command It is a force provider which has the capability to train, equip and maintain combat-ready forces for rapid deployment and employment while ensuring strategic air defense forces are ready to meet the challenges of peace time air sovereignty and war time air defense. Its services are made possible because it operates fighters, bombers and electronic-combat aircrafts. Space Capabilities Space lift operations at the East and West Coast launch bases provide services, facilities and Range safety control for the conduct of DOD, NASA and commercial launches. Through the Command and control of all DOD satellites, satellite operators provide force-multiplying effects continuous global coverage, low vulnerability, and autonomous operations. Satellites provide essential in-theater secure communications, weather, and navigational data for ground, air, and fleet operations and threat warning. Ground-based radar and Defense Support Program satellites monitor ballistic missile launches around the world to guard against a surprise missile attack on North America. Space surveillance radars provide vital information on the location of satellites and space debris for the nation and the world. Maintaining space superiority is an emerging capability required to protect our space assets. Cyberspace Capabilities Cyberspace operations are all about mission assurance on the network. Cyberspace is a vital domain, critical to military operations that must be protected. AFSPC conducts cyber Operations through its subordinate units 24th Air Force, 67th Network Warfare Wing and the 688th Information Operations Wing at Lack land AFB, Texas, as well as the 689th Combat Communications Wing at Robins AFB, Georgia. Collectively these units are the war fighting organizations that establish, operate, maintain Combining the US Navy and Army service capabilities and will be very effective. The capabilities extend to offer support crisis response missions. The army deals with all land issues while he Navy deals majorly with the Sea front issues. By involving he army, the navy will be motivated to fully dominate its area of operation. The recommendation can change if the problem persists. This is because persistence of the problem will cause a massive spread of the effects all over the involved nations. This means that the command station, which will be the ships, will be very far from the fields of operation. (2) In what order (considering deployment and sustainment restraints) would you bring in the capabilities given potential mission requirements? (Why?) As a matter of routine in the U.S. military, procedures and prior planning are made in time as the situation is monitored. It is very clear that the military observes a unitary command in all of its operations. With this understanding, the directives from the senior commandos determine how to deploy forces to a warfront. From the scenario, the Islamic movement in Algeria is invading the Moroccan border, which is a potential inter-country insecurity. This ensures that all equipment and necessary personnel reaches the intended area in time. This helps in monitoring and managing deployment execution and adjusts the flow of forces. In addition, the military can make good use of the command and control systems in tracking the deployed forces throughout the operations. The order of capabilities will begin with the Coast Guard services which links the US and African nations to ensure the effective governance. Should the problem persist the capability of dealing with all kinds of threat and intruding the non-permissive environments will follow. Since it may require other services, the army services will be the next reliable option since it provides ground capabilities. In addition, the air force services will provide its tactical capabilities to ensure that the militia hideouts are known. Lastly, the human relief will follow to make sure that innocent people have medical attention and other relief services at hand. In the scenario of North Africa, Morocco is a permissive environment because it is ready to support the US military forces in blocking the Algerian Islamic militia from disturbing peace at its border. Algeria is an uncertain environment because the Islamic militia is against the US military support. These two types of environments influence the order of deploying the capabilities (3) What command and control structure would be best suited as the U.S. integrates with host nation and possible coalition partners?   The command and control structure that best integrates well with the host nations is the Integrated Command Structure. Under this structure, the strategic commander is from the member nation while the strategic command staff, commanders, and the staff of the subordinate commands are of multinational makeup. The structure is as below. …………………… Conclusion So many calamities affect countries. They can be because of political, natural, or oppositional influence on a country. Using the military forces to combat the scenarios in the North African region ensures quick stability and normal operations. Basing on the discussion above, the Nava services have the capability to operate in any threat environment expanded warfare capability on both land and at sea thus a good way to provide operational freedom. The army services play a critical role in any type of calamity as it protects its people as well as the resources that are of great interest to the people. The air force provides compelling air, space and cyber capabilities by using the combatant commanders. Read More
