Theory Of Social Penetration: Breakfast Club Movie One of the major theories used in the movie is referred to as theory of social penetration. This is depicted from relationship which develops from communication and moves from what is considered relatively shallow non-intimate levels to deeper and more personal intimacy. As demonstrated in the movie, social penetration theory gives description of human beings as those made up like onion layers. Each layer is representation of person’s character and eagerness towards self-disclosure of information which must be peeled back carefully until the core is uncovered representing one’s true-self (The Breakfast Club, 1985). Firstly, the student’s reliability is quite low due to the lengthy delay in making crucial decisions. Additionally, the rate of accuracy displayed in such kind of person’s performance is considered below expectations. Living in isolation for fairly longer time affects the assurance factor on performance. There is no sense of credibility since the person appears non-apologetic even amidst mistakes. The tangible factors within this chapter involves the level of stewardship displayed based on faithfulness in time, integrity and morality. Such people consider themselves as outcasts hence require empathy most of the time. The character does not allow such individual to attend to other peoples’ needs hence no assurance or hope for future. Usually first meeting with strangers does not always involve openness to each other, which is a different case to those we are familiar with. Occasions of openness to one another is often preceded by getting deeper information concerning the other party, which can be through social settings. Such encounter reveals both acceptable and unacceptable information about oneself which determines kind of relationship developed. Breakfast club film evaluates the theory of social penetration where there is revelation that fears surrounding one’s introduction of true self can be overcome through diligence cultivation. The movie focuses on high school students always attending Saturday detention for social purposes. The students involved differ completely in character based on their background affiliations. Each of the students belongs to different high school clique divided into; nerds, athletes, popular kids, bad boys as well as the weirdo. They are made silent for eight hours within a library and allowed to write composition concerning their identities. Ultimately, the film portrays student’s ignorance since they become non-attentive to instructions hence indulge in other activities such as dancing, smoking and making fun throughout the day (Hughes, 1985). The occasion leads to creation of social environment which could otherwise been absent had they not been locked up together. They come to learn about one another and hence developed relationships. The students discover that they had been thrown into a vicious cycle of acting hence trying to win acceptance from people around them. The theory of social penetration is revealed when the students resort to giving information concerning them hence knowing each other better. In the first development all students are quit and cautious on their words as they speak to each other. However, at the end of the day, stereotypes are broken and as noted earlier, the ‘onion core’ is exposed making them realize their point of commonality. All students feel like they are doing one thing which involves desire to be accepted and wanted by the society. This drives them towards adopting desperate measures for the purposes of ensuring their desires are met. Such behaviors drive them towards social responsibility of being accepted in school and their families (Hughes, 1985). In “ex. fits theory” the ability of having quality character traits resides in a person’s ability to be disciplined through every domain and stage in life. Such a character enables an individual to be a team player enabling reinforcement of service capabilities. Being big makes an individual to take risks and ride above the fear of unknown such helps in renewal and restoration of leadership capabilities. There are possibilities of such individual becoming a mastery of managerial skill leading towards successful heart maturity. The act of demeaning others efforts provides dangerous foundation for teamwork. This is because the action kills ideas hence preventing amazing changes that could otherwise manifested in somebody’s life. There are no signs of making progress in such a scenario since events and people upset and suppress the energy within. Seeing one as small is very intimidating hence deprives a more productive and peaceful existence. Such actions leads to self-defeating emotions as well as disorganized love unable to induce productivity hence no results can be realized. Disorganized emotions are largely incompatible with rational thinking since there is no increased feeling of pleasure within an individual. Those with extraordinary lifestyles are capable of changing themselves and their environment them through creative thinking. Whenever someone’s efforts are appreciated, they gain energy of birthing new ideas hence become innovative within their cycles of concern. Such conditions encourage development of character leading to personality change. At this point intense emotion can be utilized for the purposes of actualizing one’s positive values. Giving people chance of seeing themselves through their positive qualities creates giants within a community. Ability to identify desire to love and finding a person with preferable traits to intensely pour out your love is the real act of seeing others as big. In such cases feelings can be constructively expressed through affection and companionship. Such love feelings induce individuals towards diligence, hence capable of creating written and practical things in the name of productiveness. The art of seeing human reason as creative helps in development of emotions hence minimize disruptive feelings such as fear, encouraging intense pursuits in life. Such perspective also helps one to view unpleasant emotions in a positive way. These may assist us get more of what we require in life since they help minimize undesirable experiences such as failure and rejection. Also depicted is Symbolic interaction theory, which explains that people make sense of the world based on their interpretation of words or symbols used by others The art of making you and me small leads to creation of weaker community. Small thinking cannot permit positive progress and usually suppresses the basic processes that aid survival and happiness. When everybody within a team is small, then there is less power of controlling changing emotions hence widespread disturbance can easily destroy such a team . Difficulty arises in understanding each other’s feeling and creating good environment for the purposes of serving community. There is little experience on emotional maturity and happiness; hence most of the actions are worth being rated as childish and outrageous. .In this case there is no art of Shared vision which is necessary in the process of harmonizing individual and group contributions. There are no possibilities of creating competent individuals since communication and understanding are at the lowest level possible. Achievement within such a team of individuals characterized by low self-esteem is based on cheap objectives owing to lack of exposure. However, it can be learnt that shared vision is essential for productivity (Ellis and Harper, 1997). The perspective of the film leads to the creation of creative, positive and strong team capable of achieving a lot in life. Such a group is identified by amazing physical and emotional advances. The group is characterized by the art of openness, where all members of the group are alert mentally and at the same time capable of listening to other’s opinions concerning situations and make considerate decisions (Ellis and Harper, 1997).Trait of openness is considered necessary for all marketplace leaders since there’s room to think creatively beyond human limitations. Working as a team with ability to appreciate and recognize one another’s efforts creates sense of modesty and guarantees appropriate completion of tasks.
