What differentiates these myths from fables is that rather than being set “long, long ago” in a “place far away, “ they are set in the modern day and presented as true fact. In general, however, these tales occurred to people only tangentially related to the recounted or the audience. Thus, they are also known as “friend of a friend story,” in addition to being known as urban myths. Healey and Glanville suggest that these oral histories and urban legends serve a social and individual purpose in modern-day life.

For example “The Hair on Her Hands” is a story that helps to develop both the teller and the listener’s skills and readiness to identify dangerous strangers and situations.
