Elements of Design and Stories of Space, Media Representation, Stereotypes, and Critical Historical Context, Art EducationPost 1: Elements of a Design Following the lecture sessions, students in their posting came up with a variety of themes drawn from the lecture notes. Some of the themes discussed include gender roles. Observations show that gender is a theme that we interact with in every situation in our lives. For instance, when walking from class, taking a walk down the street and can be traced in our own history records. Many societies in the recent time are struggling with gender roles and positions with women hoping to achieve equity with men (Basten 2012). The initial posting themes also involved the aspect of culture, and especially the Western Culture. Following sources of history relayed through the media in form of advertisement, we are able to identify our culture. The elements of culture are learnable, indigenous people can teach them to people who are alien to a particular civilization. The initial postings explain the role that advertisement plays in the societies and how advertisement influence behavior of adolescents. It seems that the dynamics in advertisement is controlled by changing how we view our history. Education has also been addressed as a theme in the initial postings; these forms of education are achieved through artwork and artifacts in museums. The main type of education being passed by these tools is mainly cultural education. Post 2: Media and Presentations of Gender The most outstanding theme in the postings is the role of the media and that of women. In support of the media, in the past couple of decades children and adolescent are the largest consumers of advertisement with some targeting them directly. These come in the form of entertainment and media technologies. This is mainly because there is a booming market in the media industry that is mainly targeting the youth yet very little is known about their content and objectives. What makes this theme even more relevant is the fact that media and advertisement developers are not clear on the implication of their products on the society. The media aims at facilitating sharing of information across all stages of life but little is done to categorize the information being shared in their platforms. Media through advertisement mainly misleads and misrepresents facts in our history (Basten 2012). The role of women in the society on the other hand is a contentious issue met with different views across the world. The feminists are trying to remodel the rigid norms in the society that degrades women into gender sensitivity. The gender roles in the modern times are viewed as equal and if they were to harm, then they should harm both genders. The postings show how men are fully privileged as opposed to women, the feminists have all the reasons to change the situation around and achieve a more balanced societal environment. Post 3: Advertisement and the End of the World However, some themes mentioned in the posting are weaker and do not have grounds for example the issue of culture and its transmission. The channels of culture transmission according to the initial postings include, museums these reveals tribal arts, folk art and other forms of performances. Each culture has its own unique way of transmitting its own values to its members. Therefore looking for a convectional way of conserving and transmitting culture is not practically achievable. In addition, culture is adopted in a society when it is deemed beneficial by the member s of that particular community. This means that enforcing a culture that is not acceptable in a particular community either through advertisement in the mass media or education systems cannot achieve much success. There is also a tendency of people sticking to their cultural norms and resist change at all costs. The only thing that can change cultural orientation of a particular community is change of approach in their historical background. Changing a cultural setting is one of the most difficult ventures that an individual or a society in general can engage in. these is mainly because cultures have interlocking roles, processes, values and communication practices (Basten 2012). Attitudes and assumptions are also unique to a particular culture this makes re modeling cultures to suit modern ideologies even more difficult. Post 4: Art Education and art Administration In the initial postings, in general the students did not capture the course content. They did not create a relationship between repetition and the overall design of a building. This element of design is of great importance because it develops consistency by using familiar elements that are repeated several times to form an exclusive viewing experience. This crucial feature also helps to create a flow and rhythm within the overall architectural design. Most importantly, it helps form a pattern that allows the designer to enable the viewer to identify important visual cues; these are sometimes referred to us visuals brandings. Very good examples of this application include Mc Donald’s’ arches which are familiar across the world. In terms of advertising, the students did not note that a campaign should be staged to enhance visual drama or breakthrough in performance. A creative approach has to be adopted in advertisement to facilitate efficient image delivery without influencing the adolescent and the youths. The kind of approach adopted must enhance the clients’ message. Not only do they need to formulate a core campaign idea, emphasis should be laid on critical and creative way of communicating something specific about a particular group. The art of advertisement has also some major boost on women, which have not been captured in the initial postings. For instance, it makes women appear more confident in what they are doing. It is used to promote the stereotype of the strength of a woman. They become stronger in the public and this is mainly because, of their beauty being displayed in the media. As it has been discovered, the elements of a design are the units of creative visual narratives. They range from painting, photography and advertising; these elements of design are influenced by culture and form a basis for visual design of any artwork. Post 5: Telling Stories through Comic Books The initial posting failed to analyze the relationship between comic books and their implication on youths. Comic books are the most complex channels that deal with visual art features. This is also the main reason why they have the highest probability of causing misunderstanding during their interpretation. Majorly because they consist of art work, graphic designs and written words. The consumer of this particular publication has to have a strong ability to analyze and interpret all the aspects of a comic presentation of any kind to avoid guesswork. Close extermination of this kind of artwork reveals that there is use of dots, shapes, visual vectors, proximity and repetition. These elements create a complex effect in all comic articles and books. Post 6: Thinking Larger Narratives uses of Elements of Design In the previous lectures, the students learned that meanings and social practices are in a state of flux that which is not in the initial postings. This situation challenges people with diverse and conflicting interests. The focus is on paintings however, the idea also cuts across comic publication and books. The postings have presented little information on how education assists in the learning how to interpret language involved in visual art and media literacy. Another important fact is that museums stand on their own and not dependent on any particular culture (Basten 2012). This means that a person viewing an exhibition in a museum draws his conclusion and observation from the artwork available in the museum. For example in the case of Van Gogh painting on a wall, only the painting and what is displayed inside will one be able to see and derive his conclusion from. In other words, objects speak for themselves and not a particular group of people. This has brought up problems of conflicting interest because people tend to give interpretations that suit their own understanding. Due to these problems, museums have developed education forums such as classes and lectures that help viewers to understand deeper the paintings in a pictures and artwork in general. This has helped revolutionizing the sector because viewers are able to pick information according to their level of experience. Work cited Basten, Fred E.
